New Halifax Bylaw Addresses Bird Feeding
Effective May 2, 2020
New bylaw aims to reduce bird droppings and other nuisances caused by bird feeding
The City of Halifax has amended By-law A-700 to address situations where the feeding of birds is causing a nuisance. The new bylaw, which comes into effect on May 2, 2020, prohibits the feeding of birds in public places, including parks, sidewalks, and streets.
The bylaw also prohibits the feeding of birds on private property if the feeding is causing a nuisance to neighbours. Nuisances can include bird droppings, noise, and property damage.
The bylaw was amended in response to complaints from residents about the negative impacts of bird feeding. Bird droppings can be a health hazard, and they can also damage property. Noise from birds can also be a nuisance, especially in residential areas.
The city is encouraging residents to stop feeding birds in order to reduce the negative impacts of bird feeding. Residents can also help to reduce the bird population by removing bird feeders from their properties and by sealing up any holes in their homes that birds can use to enter.
