Iran strikes Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles
A significant escalation in tensions between the two countries
Iran has launched a massive aerial attack on Israel, firing more than 300 projectiles, including drones and missiles, at Israeli territory. The attack, which Iran has called Operation True, is the first direct strike by Iran on Israeli territory from Iranian soil. It comes in retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Quds Force, in a US airstrike in Baghdad earlier this month.
The Iranian attack began at around 2:00 am local time on Saturday, when Iranian forces fired a barrage of rockets and missiles at Israeli military bases and civilian targets. The Israeli military intercepted many of the projectiles, but some managed to hit their targets, causing damage and injuries. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.
The Israeli military responded to the attack by launching airstrikes on Iranian military targets in Syria. The Israeli strikes reportedly killed several Iranian soldiers and destroyed several Iranian military installations.
The exchange of fire between Iran and Israel marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries. It is the first time that Iran has directly attacked Israel from Iranian soil since the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War.
The attack is likely to further strain relations between Iran and the United States, which has been a staunch ally of Israel. The US has already condemned the Iranian attack and has vowed to take action to protect its interests in the region.
The situation in the Middle East is now highly volatile. It is unclear how the Iranian attack will affect the region, but it is clear that tensions between Iran and Israel are at their highest point in years.
